Phonics skills/ Destreza de la fonetica

Phonics is my favorite basic reading skill. Why? Maybe because it’s very straightforward. If you’re asking yourself what do you mean straight forward?  I’m talking about phonics or la fonetica in Spanish.  Yes, Spanish.  This is what I taught for over 15 years in elementary education.

Spanish is a phonetic language.  The vowels only have 5 sounds; /a/,/e/,/i/,/o/, and /u/. That’s it! Once students can get a grasp on the vowel sounds, they are ready to head into the consonant sounds.  When they move into consonant sounds, we can start blending!!!!!!  This is fantastic! If you are wondering. Yes, it is important to know the letter names but in Spanish we focus on sounds first.  This is what I believe gets our students reading so much faster.

I have worked with students from the ages of 3 years old up to 1st grade.  It is a beautiful thing to see these babies grow.  When students are blending we can teach the significance of a sílaba (syllable) in espanol.  This skill will carry them through a lifelong journey of reading. ♥️📖
